WALTHAM, Mass. (October 19, 2012) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. (NYSE:TMO), the world leader in serving science, is a 2012 Team Massachusetts Economic Impact Award-Winner for its part in stimulating the Commonwealth’s economy through expansion, investment and community involvement. Each year, following a competitive process, the Massachusetts Alliance for Economic Development (MassEcon) presents the awards to companies that made the most outstanding contributions to the Massachusetts economy.

Thermo Fisher, which won silver in the Northeast region, recently opened its new Center of Excellence in Tewksbury to drive research, development and manufacturing of portable analytical instruments – a rapidly expanding market. Thermo Fisher invested $20 million into the 156,000 square foot facility, an adaptive reuse of an existing building. The company has also maintained a long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship and waste reduction and supports a variety of community endeavors in the Commonwealth.

“Our Commonwealth provides companies with unprecedented access to talent, investment and innovation that supports growth in life sciences and biotech,” said Dan Shine, president, chemical analysis, Thermo Fisher Scientific. “We’re pleased to be able to give something back through our new Center of Excellence, and we’re honored that MassEcon recognizes our commitment to the region.”

"The key to our economic recovery is innovation, and these Team Massachusetts Impact Award winners exemplify that innovative spirit,” said Greg Bialecki, secretary of housing and economic development. "Continuing to support and grow the innovation economy is one of the central goals of the Patrick-Murray Administration's economic development plan, and we look forward to seeing these companies continue to grow in the future."

Team Massachusetts Economic Impact Award participants competed regionally based on their job growth, facility expansion, investment and community involvement since January 1, 2011. MassEcon will recognize the winners during an awards luncheon on November 20, 2012, at the Seaport Hotel in Boston that features guest speaker Governor Deval Patrick.
