OAKWOOD VILLAGE, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced the introduction of the RadEye® GN+ radiation detector and the RIIDEye® GiN+, isotope identification instruments. Both devices integrate gamma and neutron scintillator detection technology, which is designed to detect nuclear and radioactive materials in all environments, as well as nuclear weapons and radiation leaks. The devices, being deployed to security, military and law enforcement agencies worldwide, are intended to serve the growing demand for more sophisticated radiation monitors with time-saving features, multi-functionality, and precise measurement capabilities.

The scintillator technology, known as CLYC (Cs2LiYCl6), is the first dual mode (gamma and neutron) scintillation detector ideally suited for homeland security and defense applications. The technology was commercialized by RMD, Inc., part of Dynasil Corporation of America, with funding from multiple U.S. government agencies.

“CLYC technology was developed to simultaneously detect potentially harmful gamma-ray sources and neutron-emitting elements while eliminating the need to use scarce Helium-3 gas as their detection medium,” stated Dynasil Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Peter Sulick.

The RadEye GN+ is an enhanced version of Thermo Scientific’s successful RadEye GN personal radiation detector, long recognized as a highly sensitive gamma and neutron search-and-find instrument. The Radeye GN+ offers increased critical gamma sensitivities, and near zero crosstalk between the gamma and neutron channels, even when exposed to large quantities of medical or industrial sources such as Cobalt 60.

The new RIIDEye GiN+ introduces next-generation improvements to the RIIDEye GN, Thermo Scientific’s handheld Radio Isotope Identification Device (RIID) with real-time gamma detection and identification capabilities plus enhanced neutron detection. The RIIDEye GiN+, engineered with CLYC as a supplemental neutron detector, was designed to advance the instrument’s neutron detection sensitivity enabling faster identification and detection of Special Nuclear Materials (SNM) that may be used in nuclear weapons.

“The ability of the RadEye GN+ to measure both types of radiation from any source with a single detector not only provides significant cost benefits; it, like the RIIDEye GiN+, also saves time to enable first responders to quickly and more accurately detect a broader range of potential threats. Customers can do more, faster, with less investment,” commented Jim Neville, Vice President of Thermo Fisher’s radiation measurement and security instruments business. “We are pleased to be the first to bring to market the detection capabilities that CLYC brings to these classes of instruments.”
